23.6% of all South Africans have Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE).
That’s 9.95 million people!
ACE scores are also from clinical screening tests; they measure the risk for adult anxiety, depression, substance use, relational dysfunction, and chronic illness.
These are 2022 stats
17.8% of them become adults that have “Probable Anxiety”.
These are 2022 stats
That’s 1.8 million people!
Probable anxiety is a clinical screening test score that indicates a concern that a person will develop an anxiety disorder, recommending further assessment. This means:
More people than the populations of Soweto + Umlazi or Soweto + Khayelitsha combined; or the entire population of the Northern Cape.
Roughly 1 in 24 adults.
58.1% of them also have “Probable Depression”.
That’s just over 1 million people!
Probable depression is a clinical screening test measuring risk of depression. It indicates non-diagnostic concern, recommending further assessment.
These are 2022 stats
Inauthenticity Sucks Your Life Dry – Literally
A measure of the amount of time, in years, lost to any form of impairment/disability/disorder across population groups, in this case specifically a mental disability, is called the “Disability‑Adjusted Life Years” (DALY) measure. It is a population-level estimate derived from multiple sources including global surveys, clinical expert panels, patient‑reported outcome studies, cross‑cultural comparisons, functional impairment scoring and quality‑of‑life instruments – all used in research across thousands of people. Years may be lost thereof due to premature death or, despite being lived with the disorder [called “Years Lived with Disorder/Disability” (YLD)], the patient may be incapacitated from various life-activities, e.g., establishing and maintaining social and romantic relationships, ability to work or keep a job, degree of mobility, cognition or self-care etc.
DALY Calculation
| Severity | Duration: YLD | Number of People Affected |
| Quantified using disability weights, which are: – numerical values between 0 and 1 derived from global surveys – based on functional impairment, not feelings Examples of disability weights Depression Mild: 0.15 to 0.35 Moderate: 0.35 to 0.45 Severe: 0.45 to 0.66 So, severe depression, if 0.66, is considered two‑thirds as disabling as death. | How long, on average, people live with the disorder. | Self-descriptive |
DALY = Severity x YLD or Duration x Number of People Affected
As you can see below per the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) dataset, the number of ‘healthy’ years lost, as demonstrative of the burden thereof, by the South African population has been increasing over the years:
| Depression | Anxiety |
| 2017: ~650,000 2019: ~680,000 2020: ~720,000 2021: ~760,000 2023: ~810,000 2024 ~ 830,000 – projected based on trend 2025 ~ 855,000 – projected based on trend 2026 ~ 880,000 – projected based on trend | 2017: ~420,000 2019: ~450,000 2020: ~480,000 2021: ~510,000 2023: ~540,000 2024 ~ 555,000 – projected based on trend 2025 ~ 570,000 – projected based on trend 2026 ~ 585,000 – projected based on trend |
2024/5 dataset yet to be published.
This means that, each year, more people succumb generally to a disability/disorder of one form or another; which should also mean the same, specifically for mental disorders – which are all anxiety-based. The population of those living with probable anxiety, based on this data, should be increasing since, logically, it from this YLD population that the DALY population is to be derived since the latter represents those who resultantly pass away after having lived some time with their disabilities – the age at which they pass away is instrumental in calculating the number of years lost.
So, an increasing DALY must be coming down this chain from the top: adverse childhood experiencers – probably anxiety sufferers – anxiety sufferers (YLDs) – DALYs.
Take Back Yourself, Take Back Your Life
Confronting the chaos and confusion in the world – in your life, is an effort which must begin somewhere; and all beginnings are piecemeal. Chaos and confusion: a.k.a. trauma, results from relational dysfunction and that manifests, in all cases, as the inauthenticity of participants in varying degrees correspondent to the level of dysfunction.
As victim or perpetrator, you are party to said dysfunction; the fault lies with the perpetrator but the responsibility, for the relationship’s overall health, is always divided equally – except in cases wherein a minor is involved. So, you have a role to play in a positive outcome, which – note, may include the relationship’s dissolution.
The first step is knowing yourself; this is imperative for your understanding of how you are complicit, by being inauthentic, in the difficulties you face daily – an understanding explorable only through the roles you play in your closest relationships. Who you are dictates the roles you choose: enable or tolerate; and it is those roles which flavour your life with difficulty or ease. So, you must understand yourself to choose your roles more in sync, more authentically, with your true self and customize your life as God intended it for you.
I offer you a reading – a syncretic reading composed of your Vedic astrological and numerological assessments – maps of your spiritual thus psychological (including mental and emotional) makeup.
